As private detective Kyle Roach flees the scene of a house
explosion, his tattered shirt resembling Miss Kentucky's sash, he suspects the

might face with her as his client.
Washington D.C. socialite and wife of a multi-billionaire
Stella Kapaneous hired Kyle to arrange a meeting for her in Wichita, Kansas.
Rather than a meet-and-greet it turns into a blow-and-go with a bomb intended
for Stella displacing large portions of an A-frame into Kyle's A-frame.
Terrified at the veracity of her enemies, Stella begs Kyle to protect her and
escort her back east to safety. "I'll pay handsomely," she says. Kyle thinks, Yeah, and I bet I'll pay dearly, too. Unable to say no to a pretty
face Kyle agrees to help her.
Kyle scrambles to make his way out of town with his new
client but not before his manic-depressive ex-wife drops back into his life.
Stella, not used to being anything but the star in everybody's universe, manages
to offend Kyle's ex and learns hell hath no fury like a woman scorned--and off
her meds.
During the ensuing four days, Kyle fights off
agents from two continents, crashes his beloved pickup into a motel room, and
steals four vehicles while protecting his client. As Kyle and Stella hurtle
across the Midwest they experience the clash of wealthy versus middle class,
East Coast versus Middle America, and cool sex appeal versus wanton wanting. Before
their journey ends, Kyle learns that clients and life don't always take the most
logical path both can get you killed and all you can do is survive--and be
ready with a smart-assed answer. And this is Kyle's first case.

Apparently a previous reviewer has no sense of humor. I found myself laughing out loud so often throughout "Breaking In" that my stomach hurt. From the very first pages, it is obvious Kyle is an inexperienced investigator. That's what makes this such a hoot!From the moment the femme fatale enters the scene, Kyle's life is thrown completely upside down - literally. Then when his ex-wife shows up, the cat-fight really begins. From a tornado, to a shootout at a cheesy motel, to an ambulance ride in Nebraksa, with explosions thoughout, Kyle must have nine lives to survive the physical and moreso the mental torture.
I had so much fun reading this story and think ninety-nine cents is more than a bargain for the abdominal workout I received. Hopefully this will be a series and Kyle will return to enhance my life with more laugh-out-loud moments!

This is an excellent read. It wasn't what I had expected but was thoroughly enjoyable and somewhat reminiscent of the Pink Panther. Cheap Skate must be a sour person if s/he was unable to detect the lighter side of it.
Good book. Lots of action.
well written and a page turner. Once started, I wanted to keep reading until i was done.
This is one of those novels that keeps your interest with a fast pace along with tongue in cheek humor and, before you know it, you've come to "the end" with a smile on your face and eager for the author's next entertaining story. Cummings is great! Please tell me a sequel is on its way!
I feel like a thief getting this great book when it was temporarily free, as this was one of the best stories I have readin a long while. I'm saddened that a "reviewer", whose history is nothing but negative reviews and votes of one star on multiple titles, has besmirched the ratings on this great book. I have this page bookmarked in hopes that a followup novel will be produced by this amazing writer.
Do you like action? Do you like lots of action? Do you like relentless action? Do you like action laced with humor? Then run, don't walk, trip or stumble, to your nearest computer and order Gary L. Cummings "Breaking In." You most certainly won't regret it. It is a great read, and I guarantee you will have trouble putting it down until you've come to the last slam-bang, ha-ha page. I did, and I am still laughing while my heart's still pounding.
I enjoyed this book. It is well written and has a story line that is attention grabbing. The main character, Kyle, has been laid off and feels his life is a loss. His best friend, a retired cop-"Staffy" now works as a part time private investigator usually investigating insurance fraud. When a high society lady looks to Staffy for help, he turns her off to Kyle. Kyle has only helped Staffy out on a few occasions on some of the more mundane fraud cases. Nothing to remotely connect him as being a great investigator or a skilled body guard Something about the woman plays to Kyle and he half decides to help her. In the process he is almost killed and from there (yes, that is just the beginning) all "H" breaks loose and they go through multiple situations where someone is trying to kill her... or him... or both of them. Not only whoever it is that is chasing Miss "High-Society", but also Kyle's ex-wife, who is back in the picture for nothing more than to make his life miserable and more at risk. Great action and suspense as well as some humor makes this a must read. 4 stars... well, the ending kind of hangs- not abruptly but could definitely use some more closure. Since it didn't, I expect a sequel to this novel or at least a next book to continue on with this as a series. Mr. Cummings, I will look for more of your books. I love Harlan Coben and you remind me of him.
